Aeronautics: design to enhance the passenger experience

Founded in 1978, Technicon Design is an internationally renowned industrial design agency. Part of the SEGULA Technologies group since 2017, it is present on three continents (Europe, Asia and North America) and supports its customers in a variety of fields, including automotive, its historic core business. Since 2019, the agency has extended its scope into aeronautics, working with seat manufacturers and airlines. Interview with Pierre Authier, Design Director.

What are the specifics of design in aeronautics ?

It’s a high-precision design task that must combine aesthetics, ergonomics, regulations, weight and industrial feasibility. The constraints are many, but it’s an exciting field in which to express a futuristic vision and think about the user experience holistically (i.e., taking into account all aspects of the experience as a whole). The result is a balance between emotion and rationality, in constant dialogue with the engineers.

Why are design and ergonomics fundamental to industry ?

Design acts as an ambassador for people in industry, translating consumer needs and desires into meaningful solutions. Understanding and anticipating these needs from the very start of the design process not only saves time, but also creates products that are better adapted to future user expectations, while fostering continuous innovation.

What are the stages in the conception of a design project ?

It all starts with an analysis of trends and passenger expectations, combined with constant technological monitoring by our teams in all industrial and fashion sectors. The creative phase includes ideation through sketches, architectural validation and Class-A 3D modeling with the Design Office. The project is then presented through renderings, films and immersive experiences (augmented reality). In collaboration with engineers and manufacturers, our experts optimize perceived quality by drawing on best practices from other industrial sectors, such as the automotive industry.

How do you see the future of design in aeronautics ?

It will be more emotional, more digital, and increasingly integrated with environmental issues. Design will be a lever for industrial efficiency and for transforming the user experience, making it a key differentiator between manufacturers: digitalization, with 3D tools and virtual reality, will play a key role in the design and presentation of projects. Design will also have to create sensitive and intuitive experiences, while recyclable and eco-responsible materials will become increasingly important. Last but not least, modularity will reduce the number of parts, and promote perceived quality, profitability and industrialization. Design is a universal language that evolves according to usage, culture and technology.
