Interview with Julien Touret, Head of Metrology

Interview with Julien Touret, Head of Metrology at our ACTIVETECH subsidiary

  • Can you tell us about your career path to date?

I began my career at the age of 25, working for SNCF Engineering in Vitry-sur-Seine. I stayed there for one year to conduct a study on the atmospheric pollution of the Paris rail network.

In September 2016, I joined Activetech, a French company based in Caen that specialises in plastics processing, where I took on the role of Metrologist. Using a ROMER measuring arm, we carried out a two-year measuring campaign on one of our largest automotive projects.

Considering the need for metrology services, we promptly invested in a three-dimensional measuring machine and in October 2017 we opened our measurements laboratory.

I subsequently progressed to the position of Head of Metrology and was able to recruit two metrologists. Then in July 2018, Activetech was bought out by SEGULA Technologies.

In April 2019, we decided to create a separate division of metrology and I then took on the responsibility for its commercial activity.

  • What does your job entail?

Metrology is the science of measurement. It is applied in all sectors where measurements are performed and ensures that these measurements are accurate. In Caen, we have a particular interest in dimensional measurements.

Today, the Caen laboratory comprises: 1 Head of Metrology, 2 Metrologists, a ROMER measuring arm with integrated scanner, a three-dimensional measuring machine and, more recently, a 3D optical sensor.

We offer our customers:

  • Expertise in dimensional measurements
  • Tool validation, process validation
  • Plan reviews
  • Control methodology
  • Training programmes for plan reading and TMM programming (Three-dimensional Measuring Machines)
  • Who are your customers?

We have many customers across all sectors where accurate dimensional measurements are involved. We provide our customers with a quality service and we guarantee that our measurements are accurate and reliable.

  • Do you have a particular success to share with us?

My most recent business trip to China.

PSA invited Activetech to assist its Chinese supplier in the design of plastic parts for an HVAC system, and called upon our metrology division to ensure the accuracy of the measurements made in China. So I travelled out to China to share my expertise as a Metrologist.

  • To sum up?

Metrology is “the art of calculating measurements” and is at the core of our daily lives.
