Whether in its marine version or its land-based variants, the REMORA system consists of two main parts: a reversible compressor that converts energy into compressed air and vice versa, and tanks for storing the compressed air. As all the technology is contained within the compressor, the system can be adapted to all types of tanks. Thanks to this modularity, REMORA can store compressed air in small cylinders suitable for homes as well as in large containers designed for energy infrastructure or communities.
REMORA Offshore : technology initially designed for the marine environment
The first version of REMORA, now called REMORA Offshore, was designed in 2014 to exploit the advantages of the marine environment in terms of cooling and pressure maintenance.

The principle behind REMORA Offshore is simple: a floating platform with a capacity of 15 MWh of power uses electricity generated by solar panels or wind turbines to pump water. This pumping compresses air using an isothermal liquid piston compression system.
This compressed air is then stored in underwater tanks located between 70 and 200 metres deep. Immersing these tanks maintains a stable temperature and pressure to prevent any loss of energy in the form of heat.
These tanks can store up to 90 MWh of energy, equivalent to the annual consumption of around 20 households. When energy is needed, the compressed air is released and the stored energy is recovered to generate electricity. This ensures a continuous supply, even when there is no wind or sun. One of the great advantages of REMORA technology is its flexibility and non-polluting nature.
Unlike other energy systems, it does not use any sources of pollution or chemicals. Air and water are used to operate the system and are released without any alteration.

Towards REMORA Stack, energy storage for industrial users
In 2021, the system was adapted for onshore use with several variations, including REMORA Stack and REMORA Home.
REMORA Stack benefits from European Union support through the Air4NRG
collaborative project, which enables SEGULA and its partners to develop test facilities to evaluate REMORA Stack in real-world conditions. To date, the REMORA Stack patent has been filed in some twenty countries across all continents.
REMORA Stack uses the same isothermal air compression technology as REMORA Offshore, but on the surface and in a format more suited to the specific needs of sites requiring energy autonomy (industrial sites, public infrastructure, shopping centres, eco-neighbourhoods, electric parks, etc.). The objective remains the same: to maximise large-scale self-consumption of green energy.

One of the major advantages of REMORA Stack is its modularity: adding containers allows manufacturers to increase storage time without having to replace the compressor, which promises significant savings.

Here, underwater tanks are replaced by standard containers measuring 12 metres in length. They store surplus energy in the form of compressed air, which can be released later to generate electricity.
