Electricity distribution Managing a changing network

Every day, electricity flows like the ‘bloodstream’ of our society. Invisible but indispensable,
it travels hundreds of kilometres from power stations to homes, factories, hospitals, charging
stations and data centres. To ensure that this journey is uninterrupted and safe, we need
reliable, intelligent networks that are capable of adapting to new uses linked to the energy transition.

A sector undergoing rapid transformation

 

The electrification of industrial uses, the massive development of renewable energies and ageing infrastructure require rapid renewal.  At the same time, network digitalisation and cybersecurity are becoming priorities. Finally, demand for skilled talent is exploding: by 2030, nearly 10,000 new recruits will be needed each year in France.

 

Optimising networks to integrate renewable energies

Electricity networks were originally designed to transport electricity from a few large power stations to consumers. However, with the rise of renewable energies, production is now much more decentralised, which means that the way electricity is distributed needs to be rethought. For Charles Fleurynck, Director of Electrical Grid Projects at SEGULA, optimising these grids is essential: ‘Not only does it reduce energy losses and improve service quality, it also strengthens the system’s resilience to variations in production and consumption.’

 

Smart grids and cybersecurity : towards a smart and secure network

Les smart grids, are modernising the way electricity is generated, transported and consumed. Acting as conductors, they enable real-time monitoring of the electricity network, automatic adjustment of electricity flows and easy integration of renewable energies. By connecting producers, consumers and infrastructure via sensors and digital systems, they make the network more reliable, flexible and resilient, while paving the way for more responsible and optimised consumption. At SEGULA, the design of smart grids involves engineers in automation, cybersecurity, data science, supervision and power electronics, as well as developers for embedded protocols and specialised technicians for connection and maintenance.

 

To make the network even smarter, the teams are mobilising:
Digital twins and BIM (Building Information Modelling) to anticipate the operation of electrical installations,
Predictive AI to ensure the balancing of the distribution system in a context of changing uses and production methods,
Supervision and telecommunication systems such as R#SPACE, SCADA and SNCC, which monitor and control electrical installations in real time, and
connected electric car charging stations to support the energy transition.

 

SEGULA is involved in the entire process: complete project management, automation of source stations, infrastructure modelling and simulation, as well as refurbishment (revamping) and environmental compliance (oil treatment, asbestos management, noise reduction).

 

In light of these developments, cybersecurity remains a key issue.

 

SEGULA implements segmented architectures, secure protocols, regular audits and resilience plans to prevent the risks of intrusion, hacking, denial of service or data compromise.

 

On the ground with Enedis : smarter, more connected networks

 

Charles Fleurynck, Director of Electrical Network Projects at SEGULA Technologies, plays a strategic role in energy transmission and distribution in France. As both a coordinator of complex projects and a developer of technical offerings, he supports sales teams working with major accounts such as RTE and Enedis. ‘My mission is to structure and manage our activities while mobilising our skills through a network of experts and our multidisciplinary teams.’

 

In the Pays de la Loire and Brittany regions, SEGULA is assisting Enedis with the project management of more than 500 connection projects, out of a total of 3,000 nationwide. These projects are aimed at both professionals and private individuals and cover electric vehicle charging stations, photovoltaic production and securing the network against climatic hazards.

 

SEGULA’s teams take charge of the entire process: technical studies, cost estimates, coordination of works and regulatory monitoring, in order to guarantee the success of each project. Project managers, site supervisors and engineers are spread across local agencies and SEGULA offices.
