Press Release 25.06.2026
Madrid: SEGULA Technologies and Martínez Segovia selected to design one of Europe’s largest electric bus depots

Following a public tender, EMT Madrid, which operates one of the largest urban bus fleets in Europe, has selected engineering groups SEGULA Technologies and Martínez Segovia to design the new Las Tablas bus depot, one of the key zero-emission bus hubs in the Spanish capital.

Engineering groups SEGULA Technologies and Martínez Segovia have won the tender launched by the Madrid Municipal Transport Company (EMT) to provide engineering services for the construction of the future Las Tablas bus depot.

This large-scale project, which forms part of EMT’s decarbonisation strategy, aims to create a new state-of-the-art facility spanning 120,000 square metres, capable of managing a fleet of 638 zero-emission electric buses.

Thanks to its strategic location in the modern Las Tablas district – one of the capital’s key economic and residential areas – the new depot will optimise bus routes across the city and eliminate “dead kilometres”, resulting in smoother traffic flow and improved air quality in the capital.

The new Las Tablas depot will incorporate next-generation engineering solutions:

  • Smart infrastructure enabling the simultaneous charging of hundreds of battery-electric buses
  • Photovoltaic solar plant for on-site self-consumption and water recovery systems
  • A 3,400 m² building dedicated to technical training and the administrative management of Madrid’s mobility network
  • Advanced BIM digital twin methodology for the simulation and optimisation of the complex’s energy performance
  • Advanced fire protection system for an industrial facility housing over 600 buses

"Simultaneously charging more than 600 electric buses is the energy equivalent of a mid-sized city that needs to be powered up every night within a matter of hours. This presents significant technological and safety challenges that we are rising to, alongside Martínez Segovia, drawing on our skills and proven experience to design from scratch an intelligent, seamless and robust system. We are proud to deliver for EMT what will become a European benchmark in urban decarbonisation."

Albert Nacinovic, Managing Director of SEGULA Technologies Spain

Present in Spain since 2001, SEGULA Technologies will support the project throughout the intellectual and project management phase. This includes basic engineering and MEP (mechanical, electrical and plumbing) construction plans, charging stations, photovoltaic installations and the electrical substation required for a charging facility of this scale.

SEGULA Technologies will also develop a new substation and sectioning centre integrated into the project. Martínez Segovia will be responsible for architecture and civil engineering. The two groups jointly responded to EMT’s tender as a temporary joint venture and were selected based on the complementarity of their expertise.

During the design phase, the project will generate numerous direct and indirect jobs. The joint venture will need to recruit specialists in power electronics, automated fast-charging system installation and industrial cybersecurity.

The project is currently in the specification drafting phase. The construction design phase is expected to be completed by end 2026, at which point EMT will launch the construction tender. The groundbreaking ceremony is anticipated from 2027 onwards.
